about

'Untapped Utility' is the new single from Sydney three-piece Mope City and the first glimpse of the upcoming LP ‘Petri Dish’ (Tenth Court). Mope City comprises songwriter and guitarist Matt Neville, bass player and vocalist Amaya Lang and drummer Sam Wilkinson. From the beginning the band has kept busy, putting out two independent cassette EPs in 2012-2013 (‘Boo Fukin Hoo’ & ‘Disneybland’), and the Small Eye 7” through Tenth Court in 2014. These releases combine downbeat-indie-garage with alt-country with shoegaze and more. Not as impossible as it sounds! The common thread is Neville’s refreshingly droll take on misery and malaise, with song titles like ‘Suicide of Town’, ‘Punchface’ and 'Blunt Razor’. In and vocal melodies. Likewise, Neville’s often affectless vocal is offset by the sweetly yearning folkiness of Lang’s. It is a formula that immediately strikes the listener and that never fails to impress in a live setting.

‘Petri Dish’ was recorded over several months at Audile Design and in the home studios of Neville and Wilkinson, mixed by Neville and mastered by Lawrence English. Predictably the album is crammed with catchy tunes, but this time around there is more emphasis on production. Mope City have stepped out of the lo-fi diy shadow, eschewed the limitations upon three-piece bands and embraced a more textural sound. The liberal use of chorus gives the record a more 80s feel than a 90s one at times. While retaining their sense of fun, these songs also have a sense of genuine darkness and emotional staying power. These sonic developments are all on show in ‘Untapped Utility’, from the opening chorus-soaked chords to the drop at 0:20 into the full-band, dual vocal catch-cry of “you always poke the parts that hurt, it’s a treat, why?” Mope City do hurt, at least a little, but it’s a good hurt. And there’s more to come.

Mope City ‘Petri-Dish’ LP is out November 6th through Tenth Court.
